I'm working my way through a book called Say What You Mean! - A Troubleshooter's Guide To English Style & Usage by R.L. Trask. Under the term "primary colours" comes the following entry:

Primary colours: A term of variable and often confused use. In physics and physiology, the primary colours are red, green, and blue, sometimes called the additive primaries. These three colours can be added together in varying proportions to produce any other hue we like, and combining all three equally produces white. The retinas of our eyes contain colour receptors for just these three colours, and a colour TV screen, likewise produces a picture by combining these three colours. In contrast, the subtractive primaries or primary pigments are cyan (peacock blue), magenta (purplish pink) and yellow. Removing these colours from white in varying proportions yields any other hue we like, and removing all of theme equally produces black. This is the basis of colour printing, since a pigment removes a certain colour of light by absorbing it: look at the edge of a sheet of postage stamps and you will see test bars of cyan, magenta, and yellow, plus black, since in practice it is difficult to produce a good black with the three primary pigments. Note that red, blue and yellow do not constitute a set of primary colours for any purpose at all.
In fashion and design, the label primary colours is sometimes used to loosely mean bold, bright, colours like red, green, blue, and yellow as opposed to more subtle colours like chartreuse, burgundy, and lilac.

It's no wonder, then, that I've only just acquired this knowledge, as this explains why I was such a dismal failure in art when I was at school!

If you think I'm wrong then say "I think you're wrong". If you say, "You're wrong", how do you know?

I learnt that I can automatically receive the latest forum messages from The Quoroom on my mobile phone ... for free! :) I'm not sure if I can explain how it's done, though! :(

I have learnt that so many people have changed their views about smoking -- and that CHAMPIX seems to be the new thing that a people have been using and it works

October this year a lady from work started on Champix and lately thats all I been hearing - i am on champix -- from all these people
I ran into an old friend that if you ever mentioned giving up smoking - gawd the roof would fly off - well guess what? he used champix and hasnt smoked for 6mths

I was trying to work out when all this quit smoking started and how long its taken for people to change their outlook-- People are so negative about it now

is it our age group -- is it the dollars -- or is it that soceity has that attitude about smoking now?

none of my kids or their friends smoke

Champix is making big bikkies and it seems to be working is what I learnt..

A few weeks ago I was in the supermarket and I saw a couple of real clangers: signs over the aisles that read "stationary" and "confectionary". So, with all the politeness I could muster, I gently pointed out these errors to the shop assistant, a woman about my age, who replied, "They're not our fault. Those are the American spellings!" Now, my deepest apologies to any US Americans who might be reading this, we know that many US contributors to web-based discussion forums have their problems with the basics of english punctuation, grammar and spelling, but I thought was an pretty poor insult of those who dwell on the other side of the Pacific Ocean (apart from the fact that the US spellings for confectionery and stationery are the same as ours, anyway).

I guess we'll have to rethink what we can now buy in supermarkets in future: lollies that don't move.
