What do you think of the new "speech bubbles". It took me a couple of days to figure this out (involving a mere two dozen lines of coding). I think they're pretty nifty. Unfortunately, the technique that I've used doesn't work for all browsers - the main exception is IE 6 - so I'm sorry if things don't appear quite as I intended them.

If you think I'm wrong then say "I think you're wrong". If you say, "You're wrong", how do you know?

A couple of weeks ago the developers of the Kunena forum software released Version 1.0.10. The new version was supposed to be a fix-up-the-problems release but, unsurprisingly, they also changed a lot of the behaviour. As it was with the last version, they decided to complicate matters.

I've spent most of the last two weeks testing the new version and, I dare say, there's more testing that needs to be done before it can be put into production. Coupled with the release of Community Builder V 1.2.1, JoomGallery 1.5.0.1 and Joomla 1.5.11 (and other software in use at this website) I've well and truly got my hands full for the next few weeks! :(

The new forum software is different. The Boardcode toolbar is different for one thing. People will probably be thrown out of their comfort zones for a little while - I certainly was - and that's to be expected. The new system fixes a lot of errors and, no surprise here, introduces a few new ones, too. I'm still sifting through the information I'm getting to do my best to make the upgrade a smooth one for our members.

If you would like to experiment/experience the new forum system, go to the "demo site" ( http://enduring.com.au/40P_demo ).

Cheers

sozz :S9:

It's never a dull moment. I've upgraded the picture gallery software (JoomGallery 1.5.0.2) and a couple of small, incidental items that most people wouldn't even notice. I'm still working on proving that Kunena 1.0.10 is OK! :(

Kunena 1.5 is expected to be released imminently which has somewhat forced my hand to go ahead with upgrading to K 1.0.10 which also requires another component to be updated - both of which have had more than their fair share of problems! :( You will notice a few changes, not just in the layout of the message editor but also in the way some of the features operate. There may be other things that may not work 100% and, because the developers are not doing any further work on K 1.0.x (because they're concentrating on K 1.5.x) we may have to live with those few problems. I'm sorry about that.

The upgrade took a while longer than I expected - about 30 minutes - and I hope I've remembered to apply the half-dozen post-installation changes that were required.

I think I'll have a bit of a rest for a while, now. :S7:

This may not seem like a message of much importance to most of you, but it helps explain my long periods of absence from The Quoroom. Today, after many weeks of sifting through the garbled reports about whether or not the latest release of the Kunena message forum software - which we use here - is safe, after weeks of analysing and compiling a list of things to do, testing, making sure I had a workable back-up plan, and so for ... I can announce that the moment that I have long been waiting for arrived. :woohoo:

I've been able to - completely successfully, I might add - upgrade The Quoroom to full Joomla 1.5 native status with the installation of the Kunena 1.5.3 forum component. Like I said at the outset, this may not seem to be something that's terribly earth-shattering, but it's consumed most of my time over the past few weeks. :S7:

It was important, for me, to get this out of the way now because my attention will soon need to shift to other matters, namely preparing to move house, and so I won't have any time to devote to researching "technical" stuff.

Although this latest change has meant that I've had to compromise by another component - one that hadn't been used, anyway - with these latest changes that I've made today I feel confident in saying that the preparation I began 10 months ago has finally come to an end. Today I feel happier knowing that all the functions I considered were necessary for The Quoroom have, at last, been put in place. :) Regrettably, though, my absences from the site seem to have contributed to a downturn in user activity (and I only have myself to blame for that). :(

One of the main features of any website, expecially those 'blog sites we all know and love/hate, is the ability to provide feedback on articles that they write.

Some time ago I experimented with a "discussbot" component which looked as if it might be useful. As it turned out it didn't "make the grade" - it didn't pass the Jooma 1.5 natively-compatible test that I now use - and so I disabled it.

That may not sound like much news to most of you probably because

(a) you don't write articles; and
(b) what the hell is a "discussbot" and where was it used at The Quoroom

but memsahib wanted to use it for the site that I developed for her. So, in one sense, The Quoroom was a guinea pig site for my work elsewhere.

To cut to the chase, I've found a rather nice commenting system which I've now installed here. If anyone is insterested, I'll provide details. :)

I've been doing a lot of updating of this website. Upgraded Kunena from 1.5.4 to 1.5.7 yesterday. The main upgrade today was Joomla (from V1.5.11 to V1.5.15) which was several versions behind and getting out-of-touch; I've also upgraded several other components today (these were also several versions behind): the picture gallery, the visitors counter, the IP monitoring tool, and the chat software. A complete, up-to-date list of the software is shown here .

I've discovered (to my embarrassment) that the chat software doesn't want to co-operate with this website any more. This is surprising because I have been able to successfully install the software on a couple of other websites. The difference between this site and the others is a bit too "technical" to explain in a few short words, but, put simply, I'm going to have to redesign this website to get the chat to work.

Now that's a good thing in itself because, over 12 months since I built The Quoroom, the site is long overdue for a face-lift. Soon, I expect ... soon. ;-)
